Research Seminar Abstract

The electronic absorption and magnetic properties of iron(II) are vastly different depending on the spin state. Iron(II) can reversibly switch its spin state through perturbation, like temperature, intermolecular interactions, coordination environment, or moderate changes on the ligand (e.g. isomerization, protonation). However, to our knowledge, there are no reports of spin state switching being promoted by post synthetic modifications on iron(II) compounds using mild and efficient reactions. Through post synthetic reactions, reactive groups can be included on the iron(II) bound ligand with more synthetic ease than traditional methods and can provide access to novel spin switching compounds and unique molecular sensors. A ligand was designed to provide open coordination sites and reactive groups to allow post synthetic reactions. The structure, magnetic characterization, and analyses of various post synthetic modifications of the novel iron(II) compound will be presented.
