Dysregulation of cerebral blood flow is related to several diseases in humans, including
Alzheimer’s disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson’s disease. Fluorescence
correlation spectroscopy (FCS), a technique commonly used to measure diffusion of fluorescent
molecules in solution, is able to measure flow velocity of blood in mouse brain vessels. Fluorescent
nanoparticles were used to image cerebral vessels and measure blood flow velocities in those vessels.
Flow velocities were measured with sub-vessel resolution and changed in response to mouse heart rate
modulation.
