Wow, it has REALLY been a long time
since the site was
updated!! Since the summer of 2002, much
has changed in the Elliott Group. Shawn
and Corey both defended successfully and are off to regular jobs. Shawn at TDA Research in Wheat Ridge,
Colorado, and Corey at Bend Research in Bend, Oregon.
Matthew, Jeremy, Di, and Mike Scott all made
it through Orals successfully, and Matthew is preparing for his
Research
Seminar later this Spring. We have two
new group members, Mike Green (AHH!! Another Mike!) who we shall refer
to as
Blue, and Jie Hong. Both are hard at
work getting cumes behind them. Joe and
John have manuscripts in the works. Boss
Mike finished his term as department chair in August 2003, and rewarded
himself
with a sabbatical in Europe for the Fall 2003 semester.
He is now back, and his presence in the lab
is a great help to all of us. Matthew
and Jeremy were both able to go to Germany and Italy, respectively, to
work
with Boss Mike during his sabbatical.
Last month we had the annual Steamboat Ski trip, which was a
great time
for all. Several former members made the
trip from all around the nation to join in the fun.
We’ll try and keep the updates more frequent. Until next time.

As usual, it has been far too long since the site was updated, but
afterall we're scientists first and publicists second. We now have
three new group members: Jeremy, Matt, and Mike. They are becoming well
aquainted with
life around the labs and are well into their first summer of research.
Debi
and Joe survived their preliminary oral exams. John, Shawn, and Corey
have
manuscripts in the works. Shawn also just submitted a manuscript to
JACS
on cobalt complex-based mediators in dye-sensitized solar cells. Shawn
should
also be defending soon and will be working at TDA Research in Wheat
Ridge,
Colorado when he finishes.

Corey Salzer and Brad have both defended and are out of here. Corey is
now working at Hach just outside of Fort Collins. Joe did a nice job on
his literature seminar and Debi is anxiously awaiting her turn. Corey
Bloom and Shawn are still plugging away on research into OLEDs and
DSSCs (respectively).

Since its been so long since this has been updated, a list of
highlights over the past six months will follow. The latest news is
that we have
expanded our group by two recently. Debi Deininger and Joe Kremer have
joined our group as graduate students (which brings the total up to
eight
for now). Corey Salzer and Brad are currently writing up and are hoping
to be out of here in short order. Also, we are less than a week away
from
our annual ski trip to Steamboat (the group is understandably
restless). And now the highlights... After moving the laser lab
upstairs, John has
singlehandedly resurrected the transient absorbance setup; the data
just
in looks good. Mike and Shawn attended the Gordon Conference on
Electrochemistry
in Ventura CA. back in January (with Dan being suspiciously absent).
Mike
has been busy writing a new proposal to the NSF (finished) and writing
the
renewal for our DOE grant (almost finished). Its been snowing like mad
this
winter and there have been many powder days over the last few months.
Everyone
had an enjoyable holiday break. The cabin party was a blast (and so
were
the potato cannons), but it did make for a rather subdued group meeting
the
following monday morning. Shawn also proved that its not safe to hold
the
potato cannon too close to your body (PVC explosions are quite
impressive);
consequently, Shawn's cannon now has an ABS rear plate. That's about it.

Summer is finally upon us here in Fort Collins which means its a little
less crowded around here and parking is free. It also means we will be
planning our annual cabin party soon. John has now passed through the
wringer
and is recovering quite nicely. His orals went well (as well as orals
can
go anyway) and the group went out to celebrate at the Trailhead Tavern
(added a new photo to the members photo
gallery ). We've also added some new things to the web page
recently. There is now another category in the research section and
several new 3D images in the gallery.

Congratulations to Francois and Laura who are the new proud parents
of Emma Haywood Pichot who is 7 lbs. 4 oz. and 19 3/4 in., and word has
it that the new family is doing well.
Corey did an excellent job on his seminar, and we finally caught John
and wrestled the chemicals from his hands and tied him to his desk so
that he can study for orals. Its always a good sign when research is
going so well that it distracts from your study time. Useless chemistry
quote of the day, "classes can fail you out, but only research can get
you out."

It looks like Val has gotten the new LASER setup all in good working
order. With this setup we can easily measure excited state lifetimes,
and using transient absorption, we can get at lifetimes of non-emissive
species. The data from these experiments looks great and the R2
values of most fits come in at about 0.999. Our hats are off to you
Val, thanks.
John Weber will be under the gun soon and is preparing for his orals
exam. Corey Bloom will give the Analytical Div. Seminar next week on
his
research. To all of you folks who stopped by our labs to check out CSU
as a grad school, we hope you enjoyed your trip, and good luck with
your
decision.
Congratulations to Francois and Laura who will become parents soon!

We're just getting our new web site up and running, so be patient and
content will fill in soon. If you'd like to give some feedback on our
new look, just write an email to Shawn and let him know
what you think. Mike is now back from PittCon and
life continues as normal around here.
March 15, 2000
We just finished hosting our spring mass visit for undergraduates
interested in attending graduate school here. Our poster session went
well and several students met with Shawn Sapp and Corey Bloom on
Saturday to talk more about the group.
Mike is currently off at PittCon in New Orleans where he is giving a
talk on electro-luminescence, electro-chemi-luminescence, and organic
light-emitting diodes.
