Current research involves the use of chromiumcarbene complex photochemistry to generate unusual, small-organic molecules, such as optically active cyclobutanones and azapenams, and to convert these compounds to biologically active compounds such as nucleoside analogs and macrocyclic lactams. The macrocyclic lactams are being studied as ligands for transition metals, as DNA intercalators, and as monomer units for the self-assembly of nanoscopic polymetallic arrays.
