The Marshall Fixman Summer Theory Program is a summer research opportunity for undergraduates who have completed the junior-level physical chemistry course sequence or equivalent coursework.

Where

Department of Chemistry, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado

Stipend

$5,000 + on-campus housing  for the 10-week summer program. In addition, the program covers the cost of the double-occupancy modern dormitory accommodations with full board.

Housing

Students are housed in a residence hall on the Colorado State University campus with other summer undergraduate researchers from across campus.

Travel

Funds are available to help with travel costs for non-CSU undergraduates.

Instructional Activities

As a part of the summer program students will participate in two short courses (one in computer modeling and one in programming) as well as seminars presented by current theory program graduate students, post-docs, and faculty.   The students are encouraged to participate in the research and presentation skills activities organized as a part of the Chemistry REU program.

Methodologies Used

Molecular simulation methods for condensed phase systems (molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo), and computational quantum chemistry for molecular electronic structure.

Software

Almost all projects will involve some computer programming. Depending upon the project, the summer student will also gain experience using computational chemistry software packages designed for  molecular simulation of condensed phases (for example, DL_POLY), or for molecular electronic structure determination (for example, Gaussian 09), and/or a range of in-house codes.

Computer Facilities

In addition to the computer workstations available in the laboratories of the participating research groups, the university provides access to high-performance computing through its Information Science & Technology Center (IsTEC).
