Summer Research in Theoretical Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University announces the Marshall Fixman Summer Theory Program, a summer research opportunity for undergraduates who have completed junior physical chemistry.

When: May 30 to August 4, 2006.

Where: Department of Chemistry, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado

Stipend: $3,300 + oncampus housing

Application: There is an on-line application at http://tallship.chm.colostate.edu/chemistry/theory/application.html

Applications submitted prior to April 15, 2006 will receive full consideration

Instructional Activities: As a part of the summer program students will participate in two short courses (one in computer modeling 1 and one in programming) as well as weekly seminars presented by current theory program graduate students, post-docs, and faculty.

Methodologies used: Statistical Mechanics2, 3 (molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo), Electronic Structure 4 (transition states, excited states, and charge distributions), Molecular Mechanics4 (conformational analysis and transition state modeling)

Research areas: Biochemistry, Catalysis, Clusters, Liquids, Nanomaterials, Photochemistry, Polymers, Spectroscopy

Software: Almost all projects will involve significant FORTRAN programming. Depending upon the project participants will also gain experience using Cerius2, Insight/Discover, Gaussian 98 and 03, MolPro, and/or a range of in-house codes.
