FAQ – Chemistry Courses

What is the difference between CHEM 107 (Fundamentals of Chemistry) and CHEM 111/113 (General Chemistry I and II)?

CHEM 107 and CHEM 111/113 cover similar material, however CHEM 107 is a one-semester course, whereas CHEM 111/113 are a two-semester sequence. As a result, topics in CHEM 111/113 are covered in much greater detail and with a much stronger math emphasis than the topics in CHEM 107.

What is the difference between CHEM 245 (Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry) and CHEM 341/343 (Organic Chemistry I and II)?

Similar to CHEM 107 and CHEM 111/113, CHEM 245 is a one-semester course, whereas CHEM 341/343 combine to make a two-semester sequence. Topics in CHEM 341/343 are generally covered in much greater detail than the topics in CHEM 245.

Which general or organic chemistry course is right for me?

This will depend on your major. You should double check with your major advisor before choosing a general or organic chemistry sequence.

What is the difference between CHEM 341 (Modern Organic Chemistry I) and CHEM 345 (Organic Chemistry I)?

These two courses cover the same lecture material. CHEM 345 is restricted to chemistry majors only, whereas CHEM 341 is open to all other majors.

Is there a laboratory course associated with CHEM 341?

No. Students should take CHEM 341 without lab. There is a two-credit lab, CHEM 344, that is taken concurrently with second-semester organic chemistry, CHEM 343 (or after CHEM 343).

I have a complaint about a chemistry course or a chemistry professor. What should I do?

First, talk to the instructor of the course. Many conflicts can be directly resolved with your instructor. If, after talking to the instructor, you still don’t feel as though your concern is being addressed, go to the main office located in the Chemistry building. There, you can fill out a formal complaint form and that form will be given to the appropriate person, who will then contact you regarding your complaint.
