Description:Professional development seminar in Diversity\, Equity\, and In
clusion —\n\nThis presentation addresses the coverage of diversity\, equ
ity\, inclusion\, and respect (DEIR) issues as are now often encouraged in
classrooms\, on campuses\, and in the broader chemical discipline.  The
2023 Guidelines for Bachelor’s Degree Programs by the American Chemica
l Society also recommends DEIR training and practices in departmental prog
rams for faculty\, staff\, and students.  However\, examples of incorpor
ating DEIR activities in science classrooms are limited\, and traditional
chemistry education does not typically include DEIR exercises.  Therefo
re\, the aim of this presentation is to communicate my effort to promote D
EIR in my chemistry courses and share insights on including diverse perspe
ctives and providing DEIR activities for students.  I will discuss appro
aches and strategies for integrating DEIR activities into a chemistry clas
s\, resulting in a STEM education that is broadly inclusive by minimizing
implicit bias and microaggressions\, and to encourage wider participation
in STEM disciplines and careers. 4:00 pm
