Description:Seminar Abstract:\n\nDiscovery of competitive permanent magnet
(PM) materials requires a more comprehensive understanding of how to tune
magnetic properties. To develop materials with comparable performance to r
are-earth-based PMs\, magneto-crystalline anisotropy must be understood no
t only in 4f systems\, but also in 3d transition metals. McGuire et Al. s
uccessfully enhanced the magneto-crystalline anisotropy in hexagonal Fe3Ge
by alloying Co onto the Fe site. Tuning the anisotropy allowed a material
that was previously unusable at ambient conditions to become a potentiall
y competitive PM. This work demonstrates that targeted chemical substituti
on can be used to tune magneto-crystalline anisotropy in 3d transition-met
al systems\, providing a potential pathway toward rare-earth-free PM mater
 ials. 4:00 pm
