Description:About the Seminar:\n\nWe have made a lot of exciting changes to
the chemistry major at CSU\, and we invite students (majors\, minors\, an
d the chem-curious) and faculty and staff to learn more about those change
s in this seminar.\n\nChemistry\, the central science\, engages biochemist
ry\, biology\, engineering\, and environmental and materials sciences. Che
mists synthesize compounds ranging from life-enhancing medicines to the ma
terials of modern society\, with the understanding that there can be unint
ended consequences. Chemists collect and analyze data used in policy decis
ions\, including those involving the air\, food\, soil\, and water. Chemis
ts develop materials and processes that are safer\, and are more energy an
d material efficient. Chemists develop processes for the recovery and conv
ersion of waste to raw material.\n\n“I really think that our students wa
nt to ‘do’ things to make the world a better place\,” said Chair of
the Department of Chemistry\, Matthew Shores. “The concentrations are ai
med at preparing students for chemistry-related jobs right after their B.S
. degree.”\n\nThe Chemistry major and five associated concentrations (en
 vironmental\, forensic\, health science\, materials\, and sustainability)
will be described along with upcoming developments including new lab space
 . 4:00 pm
