Description:Literature Seminar\n\nTungsten trioxide has garnered interest f
or applications in energy efficient materials. Reversible\nelectrochromism
resulting in optical modulation makes tungsten trioxide a prime candidate
for smart\nwindows and digital displays. Optical modulation in transition
metal oxides (TMOs) is often attributed to\ncation insertion\; however\,
the physical mechanism responsible for these optical changes has not been\
ndescribed precisely in literature. Understanding the mechanism of optical
modulation in electrochromic\nTMOs would provide precise tuning of optica
l properties improving functionality. To advance the field of\nelectrochro
mic materials and to gain quantitative knowledge about optical absorption
in TMOs\, a\ndiscussion of polaron hopping is necessary. The absorbance of
energy attributed to polaron hopping is\ncomputed by accounting for the e
lectronic transition between adjacent atoms in a material with\nlocalized
electron density. To characterize the optical absorbance in amorphous tung
sten oxide\, Triana\net al.(1) analyzed experimental spectra of oxygen def
icient and lithiated films\, calculated refractive index\nand extinction c
oefficients\, computed the complex dielectric function and optical conduct
ivity\, and\naccurately modeled the effect of small-polaron hopping on the
magnitude of optical absorbance. They\nconcluded that the observed optica
l change from transparent to dark blue amorphous tungsten oxide\nfilms due
to the absorption of infrared and visible light was responsible for incre
asing optical\nconductivity and is a result of polaron hopping. Triana et
al.’s approach can be applied to other TMOs to\ncharacterize optical mod
 ulation of small-polaron hopping.\n(1) Triana\, C. A.\; Granqvist\, C. G.\
