Description:About the Seminar:\n\nActinides in the +3 oxidation state occup
y central roles in many areas that are important for our quality of life.
These range from developing targeted alpha therapy in treating cancer to p
rocessing spent nuclear fuel. Hence\, there is pressing need to advance fu
ndamental understanding of +3 actinide coordination chemistry. While numer
ous heroic efforts have advanced AnIII chemistry\, two main technical chal
lenges have impeded scientific advancements. These include (1) obtaining s
ufficient quantities of highly radioactive actinides for study\, and (2) s
afely handling the highly-radioactive actinide elements. This talk will de
scribe our recent efforts to make use of upgrades at the SSRL synchrotron
facility to overcome the challenges associated with conducted studies on A
 c\, Am\, and Cm elements.\n\n&nbsp\; 4:00 pm
