Substituted heterocycles are prevalent in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals, especially those with sulfonyl-, sulfoxyl-, and alkyl-containing substituents. Due to their high oxidation potential and propensity for catalyst poisoning, the C(sp2)-H functionalization of N-heterocycles can be challenging. Pyridinium salts has been pivotal in recent light-promoted methods involving electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes, as they negate the need for expensive, tailor-made photocatalysts and have been used in the 3-chlorination of quinoxalinones. I propose utilizing the redox capabilities of pyridinium salts through these EDA complexes to create a general platform for the sulfonation, sulfoxidation, and alkylation to a variety of hard-to-oxidize heterocycles.
