The annual Global Women’s Breakfast at Colorado State University took place on Tuesday, February 10, uniting a diverse group of faculty, graduate students, and staff to celebrate the accomplishments of women and engage in thought-provoking discussions on gender equality, empowerment, and collaboration. CSU Chemistry was one of the 425 GWB events across 64 countries. Over the past eight years, GWB events have united participants from 100 countries. The event underscored CSU’s commitment to fostering an inclusive scientific community and empowering women to lead in the field of research and education. The event was facilitated by Professor Akiko Nakamura. She gave a talk on this year’s theme, “Many Voices, One Science” before opening up the room to a larger discussion. Attendees actively engaged in discussions surrounding collaboration, work life balance, and the importance of building a community with scientific research as a foundation.
Professor Nakamura says, “I have been organizing this event at CSU since 2023, and we have now successfully hosted four gatherings. Each year, the GWB creates a welcoming space for faculty, students, and researchers to connect with colleagues beyond their usual professional circles. The event not only strengthens our local community but also highlights IUPAC’s international projects and initiatives, demonstrating how chemists can contribute to advancing the field on a global scale.
A special feature of the GWB is its annual spotlight on an IUPAC project. This year, the event highlights the newly released IUPAC Guiding Principles of Responsible Chemistry. Having been involved in this project over the past several years, I was especially excited to introduce these guiding principles to the CSU community and to discuss their importance in shaping the future of responsible and ethical chemical practice worldwide.”
