Dr. William Chuirazzi will give a presentation on some of the work that Idaho National Laboratories are involved with at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC).
William “Bill” Chuirazzi is a Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) research scientist currently working as the instrument scientist for the ZEISS Xradia 520 Versa X-ray microscope located in the Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory (IMCL) at the Material and Fuels Complex (MFC). In this role, Dr. Chuirazzi performs X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to nondestructively examine a variety of both radiological and non-radiological samples in 3D, including nuclear fuels, structural materials, advanced manufactured materials, and battery materials. In addition to his XCT work, he also has experience with neutron computed tomography (nCT), image processing and analysis, and radiation detection, particularly with the development of neutron scintillators.
Bill started at INL in 2018 as a Graduate Fellow where he worked on his PhD utilizing MFC’s Neutron Radiography (NRAD) Reactor to perform nCT and develop boron-based neutron scintillator screens. Upon completion of his PhD in 2020, he became a Russell Heath Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow with a research project focused on image analysis and combining nCT and XCT datasets. He transitioned to his current role of instrument scientist in April 2022.
Dr. Chuirazzi holds a bachelors degree in Engineering Physics (2015), and masters (2017) and PhD (2020) degrees in Nuclear Engineering, all from The Ohio State University.
