Held in conjunction with the U.N. Day of Women and Girls in Science, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women’s Breakfast (GWB2023) took place on February 14, 2023. This year the event’s theme was, “Breaking Barriers in Science.” The overall goal of this series is to establish an active network of all genders to overcome the barriers to gender equality in science. GWB brings participants together from all science disciplines and organizations, including universities, clubs, governments, and non-governmental organizations.

Colorado State University’s Dr. Akiko Nakamura hosted a GWB2023 Event in CSU’s Chemistry Research Building. CSU alone represented the Midwest region in the major international event.

GWB provides meaningful opportunities for participants to create a community and share ideas and strategies for continued growth in the field of science. Attendees, both virtual and in person, discussed how to increase diversity and equality in science. Through engagement, the event increased attention to diversity issues, led to new connections between groups within and outside CSU, provided leadership development opportunities for women, and allowed for more open discussions on the need for more diversity in science.
