Professor Chuck Henry has won a Scholarship Impact Award: Career Achievement. This award highlights those whose research and scholarly activities have had a major impact on their field nationally and/or internationally.
Henry’s combination of scientific peer-reviewed publications, grant funding, and students who have graduated were taken into consideration for the award. His substantial contributions and the development of low cost diagnostics that can be used for environmental measurements as well as clinical diagnostics, made him a standout in analytical chemistry.
Through his companies Access Sensor Technologies and Burst Diagnostics, Henry has worked to make air/water sampling and infectious disease testing simple and accessible on a global scale. His research is all about global health and making testing and diagnostics easier particularly in resource limited settings.
His work on disease testing products includes testing for bacteria, viruses, heart disease, and cancer. Henry says, “we’re trying to expand into some clinical studies on the heart failure work that we’re doing, the cardiovascular disease, and then we’re continuing to push on cancer diagnostics, and then we’re expanding our water quality testing to go after more and more toxic heavy metals.”
Henry’s next step in disease testing is to use the diagnostic tools to help people who have HIV. Henry’s group aims to provide those who are undergoing treatment, an at-home way to test.
On winning the Scholarship Impact Award, Henry says, “I am extremely honored. I think it’s also a testament to the research group and the hard work of a lot of students and postdocs throughout the years. So it’s definitely, I view it very much as a team award. It really recognizes the contributions of a lot of people throughout the years.”
