Guidelines for preparing and submitting an oral or poster presentation
As an interdisciplinary event, the Postdoc Research Symposium incorporates posters and talks that cover a
variety of topics and disciplines. Any CSU research affiliate—holding a Doctorate degree and not in a tenure
track position—can submit an abstract to present a poster or oral presentation.

Poster presentations:
1. Your poster can be tailored toward a technical audience, but presenters should note that the audience will come from a broad array of backgrounds.

2. Posters will be scored based on the Objective/Purpose, Methodology/Design, Results/Outcomes, Discussion, Conclusion, Impact, Poster Appearance/Layout, and Presentation. Judges will likely be from outside of your field of study, so it is important to explain your project to a lay audience. Judges may reach out with questions or comments during the judging process.

3. Suggested Dimensions – Standard poster size is 48×36 inches, but sizes can vary. Board sizes to hang posters on will be 4’ x 4’.

4. All poster presenters must set up their posters 30 min prior to the start of their assigned group session.

Oral presentations:
1. Your research talk is meant to engage a wide audience and convey a broad scope of your research or a single study.

2. Upon acceptance, you will be asked to submit your slide deck at least two days prior to the symposium, for back up purposes!

3. Make sure to practice your talk and stay within the time limit of your presentation (i.e., 3 min or 10 min).

4. Research talks will be scored based on the Objective/Purpose, Methodology/Design, Results/Outcomes, Discussion, Conclusion, Impact, Communication Skills, and Overall
Presentation. Be prepared to explain the significance and main points of your work to people outside of your field and be careful of the professional jargon that you use.

5. Make sure that what you say is comprehensive with rich content about your project. Present in an engaging manner, making it interesting for the audience.

6. Questions will follow, but please keep responses brief.
