Panel Members:

Dr. Nicholas Thornburg, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Thornburg is a chemical reaction engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO. Nick has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University, in addition to industrial R&D experience with The Dow Chemical Company and 3M. Nick’s current research interests at NREL lie in multiphase reaction engineering for advanced mobility applications and for renewable small-molecule chemicals and fuels.

Dr. Brooke Benson, Corden Pharma

Dr. Benson is an organic chemist specializing in total synthesis of natural products. Dr. Benson just graduated from CSU and will be starting as a Senior Chemist at Corden Pharma in January.

Lacey Beck, Kuntze Instruments

Lacey earned her MS in chemistry out of the Sambur research group in June 2019. She worked as an electrochemist in the Advanced Technology Group at Hach from June 2019 – January 2020. Then she worked as a QC Analyst at Boulder Scientific Company from January 2020 – July 2020. She was hired as the Customer Success Manager at Kuntze Instruments in July 2020 and has been in that role since.

Dr. Zach Nilsson, Edinburgh Instruments

Dr. Nilsson was in Dr. Justin Sambur’s group and defended his PhD in July 2021. In Justin’s group, Zach worked on a fluorescence energy transfer project and got experience building optical systems. Zach started with Edinburgh Instruments immediately after defending. At Edinburgh Instruments he is the Optical Product Engineer covering North America.
