Independent Research Proposal:

The potato is one of the most prominent food crops in the world and is often regarded as the most accessible and affordable nongrain crop that has many health benefits. Each year, the world produces around 368 million metric tons of potatoes. That production is often threatened by diseases, causing a 10% loss in annual production. While the use of chemical pesticides can be beneficial, they can also cause the development of fungicide resistance in pathogens and thus new and effective natural fungicides are necessary. Trichothecrotocin D has been shown to effectively inhibit multiple pathogens that threaten potato growth. The total synthesis of Trichothecrotocin D and potential derivatives is proposed for their use as potential new fungicides.
