I am trying to register for CHEM 111 and I keep getting a “PREREQUISITE NOT MET” or a “MULTIPLE COMPONENTS REQUIRED” error message, even though I know that I meet the MATH 118 prerequisite. What should I do?

Are you sure that you are picking a lecture and recitation section that match? Each CHEM 111 student is required to register for both lecture and recitation. Recitation is NOT the same as lab (lab, CHEM 112, is a completely separate course). On the RamWeb schedule, lecture sections are numbered 001, 002, 003… and recitation sections are numbered R01, R02, R03…Lectures and recitations are paired according to the following scheme:

001 – must choose R01-R06

002 – must choose R07-R12

003 – must choose R13-R18

004 – must choose R19-R24 and so on.

Try picking a lecture/recitation pair that match and add those two components to your schedule WITHOUT a CHEM 112 section (concurrent registration in lab is not required). After you have successfully added CHEM 111 to your schedule, then try to add CHEM 112.

The Chem Prep pre-requisite for CHEM 111 has been discontinued, as of the 2023 summer session. Students should be able to register for CHEM 111 without completing Chem Prep. Other pre-requisites remain in place.

Is it possible for me to withdraw from my chemistry lecture course, but stay enrolled in my chemistry lab course?

This may be possible. You should contact the appropriate lab coordinator:

  • General chemistry laboratory courses (CHEM 104, CHEM 108, CHEM 112 or CHEM 114): Ben Reynolds Yates 406

I failed CHEM 111. Do I have to retake (or repeat/delete) both the lecture and recitation?

Yes. Recitation is part of lecture. If you retake the lecture, you must also retake recitation.

I failed CHEM 111 but I passed CHEM 112. Do I have to retake (or repeat/delete) both the lecture and the lab?

No. You do not need to retake CHEM 112 if you’ve already passed it.

What are the evening CHEM 111 periods that I see on my schedule?

Those are times reserved for evening exams. They are a required component of the course.

I have not completed the appropriate MATH prerequisite course for CHEM 107, CHEM 111 or CHEM 113. May I have an override?

No. Departmental policy requiring that MATH prerequisites be met prior to enrolling in chemistry courses is very strictly enforced. You must complete the appropriate MATH prerequisite course before you can enroll in chemistry. Concurrent enrollment is not allowed.

I am registered for lecture but there aren’t any available spaces in the corresponding lab. What should I do?

For a variety of reasons, this is often the case. You should put your name on the RamWeb waitlist and wait for a spot to open up to you. If you do not ultimately get into a lab, that’s ok. With only a few exceptions (CHEM 335/334, CHEM 474/475) most labs/lectures do not require concurrent registration. For example, you may take CHEM 111 in the fall semester and CHEM 112 in the following spring semester. The course material and your grade in a lecture course does not depend on your grade in the corresponding laboratory course.

May I have a capacity override into a full laboratory course?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Because of equipment constraints and safety considerations, we will not override the capacity of laboratory courses. The best course of action is for you to put your name on the RamWeb waitlist and wait for a spot to open up.
