Literature Seminar
The Eastern Cape of South Africa has experienced a major water crisis in recent years, which could lead to desperation and the consumption of river water by economically disadvantaged areas. Due to this possible consumption, the monitoring and identity of pollutants within local waterways is highly important in order to protect the health and well-being of the local populations. This presentation will discuss how using 1H-NMR could help in determining what is actually in the rivers as well as what is and is not removed by water treatment plants before being deposited back into the water systems. Additionally, a method will be discussed in how combining the usage of both mass spectrometry and 1H-NMR could provide further information on determining the identity of more complex molecules within the system.
